Hidden in the highlands of South Sulawesi, Toraja is a region unlike anywhere else in Indonesia, known for its deeply traditional culture, Aluk To Dolo.

Aluk To Dolo, meaning “the way of the ancestors,” is a belief system centered around the idea that blessings from your ancestors are earned by honoring them well. Death plays a central role in this culture; in order for the soul to reach Puya (the afterlife), specific rituals and ceremonies must be performed. The most famous of these are the elaborate funeral ceremonies, which can last for days.

When visiting Toraja, you will notice that death is woven into daily life. The deceased remain sacred and are not simply buried, be prepared to encounter human skulls and sometimes preserved bodies. Come with an open mind and take the time to understand the meaning behind it all. Toraja is not a dark place. Here, death symbolizes something beautiful: not an end, but the beginning of a new journey, carried forward by family.

To prepare you for your Toraja trip, we put together a guide combining knowledge from a local and a foreigner who has visited Toraja multiple times.
